I served as a research assistant to Dr. Gallo-Cruz from 2022 - 2024. Dr. Gallo-Cruz first invited me to provided a guest lecture on Welfare State research for her Sex & Gender Course in 2023. I then served as her teaching assistant for this came course in the Fall 2024. This is a sample of her formal teaching observation on the three lectures I provided while serving as her teaching assistant.
Dr. Gallo-Cruz is also chair of my dissertation committee. She is, therefore, very much acquainted with my research and work ethic.
I had the good fortune to begin my doctorate studies in a graduate class of Dr. Ramadoss' titled "Work and Family." Having very much enjoyed this course, I stayed in contact with Dr. Ramadoss as I moved through my program which is housed in a different department.
When I saw she was teaching this undergraduate course, "Work and Family in the 21st century," I reached out to ask if she needed a teaching assistant. She was enthusiastic about taking me on as a teaching mentee, and I benefited immensely from her guidance in teaching this course.
Dr. Ramadoss provided me with verbal in-the-moment and post evaluation feedback.
Dr. Ramadoss and I are co-authoring a journal article based on this class that will discuss our approach to AI, adapting to student feedback, and teaching the revision process to undergraduates.
At the end of the course, we discussed points of the field that deserve more attention in the next offering. These included showing the long-term effects of the motherhood penalty and highlighting the sandwich generation. We also discussed ways to consider our own and the class's overall mental health by providing pauses in the syllabus. Pauses could include inviting guest speakers or watching a film in class.
Overall, Dr. Ramadoss was impressed with the evaluations I received from students after one month, saying she did not usually see such positive evaluations for someone with under 10 years of teaching experience. She was most impressed that the students explicitly stated their sense of safety in the class, noting that psychological safety is difficult to achieve in under one month. She was also impressed with my ability to consistently bring passion and energy to the class throughout the semester as well as adapting graciously to student requests for adjustments.
